Hi all, can’t believe that the first week is all over, and there is only 8 more to go.  This week Rebecca McMurtrie (student teacher) has been taking some control and she will continue this next week.
This term for our inquiry unit we are focusing on Matariki.  The children have been introduced to the topic this week and its meaning and we will continue to develop a greater understanding throughout the term.  In week 9 we are having Llyod Esler come in with some of the astronomy club so we have the opportunity to view the night sky.  More details to come.
For PE this term we are going to focusing on ball skills around, soccer, rugby and netball.  We will also be doing some PMP skills.  This will be every Friday, so please ensure that your child has their PE uniform on this day.
Library days are still on Thursdays – library books are to be returned in the green box beside the home folder box in the classroom.
For maths we have had a whole class focus on skip counting, as we will be moving into some multiplication and division – seeing groups and equal sharing.
For writing we will be making a start on instructional writing – this will link nicely with my matariki unit.
We will continue with instructional reading after morning tea this term.  Some children are going into other classes.  This is only to help with groupings.
In RE we will be starting to focus on the Holy Spirit strand.

Our paint shirts look like they have seen better days – so can I  please ask for one of ‘Dad’s old t-shirts’ to replace the paints shirts that we have.
Some of our lunch boxes are looking pretty empty by the time it gets to lunch.  Please remember the children are allowed 1-2 small things for morning tea time, then we have a piece of fruit for brain break then it is lunch.  Can you please check that your child has enough in their lunch boxes, and that they have a water bottle with them each day.

It is great to see parents coming in for prayers, can I please ask that you sit with your child in the prayer circle.  This is a really important time of the day for the children and it would be great for the children to see joining in and praying with us.

Some dates for the term.
Thursday 15/5    Verdon Production Visit
Tuesday 20/5     Parent Hui 7.30 pm
Sunday 15/6      Aerobics Festival
Tuesday 20/5     School Cross Country
Wednesday 4/4  Zone Cross Country
Wednesday 18/6 Southland Cross Country
Monday 23/6      John Parsons
Friday 27/6        Sacred Heart Feast Day Mass

If you have any questions regarding this term or anything else, please come and see me or email me.

Smoke alarm

Posted by on Apr 12, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

During our ‘Fire Wise’ unit, one of the students asked “why we don’t have a smoke alarm in our classroom?”  So we took this question to Mr Forde, and he said that we would be able to put up a smoke alarm.  On our final visit from the firemen, Mr Duffy put up our smoke alarm in the class room.

We know that once we hear the ‘beep beep beep’ we need to:

Fire Wise

Posted by on Apr 2, 2014 in Uncategorized | 1 comment

We have just started our ‘fire wise’ unit where we are learning how to be fire smart.  Yesterday Ruby’s dad came to school with the fire truck to show us inside, and we even had a go spraying some water.

Today we did wrote some recounts:

Room 1 got to go see the fire truck at school.  It looked cool. We saw the hose and we learned about fires.  We had to squirt the hose.

Yesterday my dad came with the fire truck at school.  He got the hooligan tool.  He taught about being ‘fire wise.’  We got to squirt the hose.  We got to get a sticker.  We got to go inside the fire truck.  We learnt that you have to get down, get low and get out fast.  My dad opened the toolbox.  He needs lots of water, 1500 litres.

Yesterday we went outside to see the fire truck, and it was fun.  We learnt about being ‘fire wise,’ you have to get down, get low and get out fast.  We learnt about different tools.

Yesterday Mr Duffy came to school.  We did ‘fire wise’ at school. We saw the fire truck.  Mr Duffy came to teach us about fire safety.

Yesterday we saw Mr Duffy.  Mr Duffy told us how to get out of our house.  If it is a fire, if smoke kisses you, get down, get low and get out fast.

Yesterday Mr Duffy came to school and taught us how to be ‘fire wise.’  We went after lunch.  Mr Duffy taught us to be safe when there is a fire.  Mr Duffy showed us a hooligan tool.  They have a first aid kit and we learn we need to get down, get low and get out fast.

Room 1 saw Mr Duffy and the hooligan tool at school.  We saw a fire truck.  He taught us about being fire wise.

Yesterday the fire truck came.  They fight fires.

I liked when I got in the fire truck.  I liked when we saw the hooligan tool.

Yesterday Room 1 saw a fire truck.  We looked at the tools and got to squirt the hose.  Mr Duffy showed us how to stay safe.

St Patrick’s Day FUN!

Posted by on Mar 18, 2014 in Uncategorized | 3 comments

On Monday the children in Room 1 all came to school dressed in GREEN to help celebrate St Patrick’s day.  We had lots of fun learning about St Patrick and how he became a Saint, and the meaning of a ‘Shamrock.’  We found out that St Patrick used the Shamrock to show that ‘The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit are all one, and that is way it is represented as a lucky symbol.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!
